Private Pilot Requirements

 Here’s a summary of the FAA requirements for private pilot certification:


  • Be at least 17 years of age
  • Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
  • Hold a U.S. student, sport, or recreational pilot certificate
  • Hold at least a third-class medical certificate
  • Log at least 40 hours of flight time:
    • At least 20 hours are flight training from an authorized instructor
    • 10 hours of solo flight training
    • 3 hours of cross country
    • 3 hours at night
    • 3 hours of instrument time
  •  Pass the knowledge test (Written)
  • Pass the practical test (Flight)
