Private Pilot Requirements
Here’s a summary of the FAA requirements for private pilot certification:
- Be at least 17 years of age
- Be able to read, speak, write, and understand English
- Hold a U.S. student, sport, or recreational pilot certificate
- Hold at least a third-class medical certificate
- Log at least 40 hours of flight time:
- At least 20 hours are flight training from an authorized instructor
- 10 hours of solo flight training
- 3 hours of cross country
- 3 hours at night
- 3 hours of instrument time
- Pass the knowledge test (Written)
- Pass the practical test (Flight)
